David Marques is a young Portuguese conductor currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Orchestral Conducting at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles, under Robin Engelen. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Conducting, Music Theory and Musical Training from the University of Aveiro, and further complemented his education with advanced orchestral conducting studies under António Vassalo Lourenço at the same institution.
His artistic activity encompasses a broad repertoire ranging from the baroque period to contemporary music, with a particular interest in stylistic clarity, structural understanding, and the construction of a coherent and expressive sonic balance. His musical training also includes piano and vocal studies, which strongly influence his approach to conducting and his direct work with performers.
His artistic development was significantly shaped by his repeated participation in the International Course of Orchestral Art, where he worked with conductor Ernst Schelle. This collaboration resulted in an invitation to serve as a stand-in conductor, as well as the awarding of a reference letter acknowledging his artistic and professional development.
In Brussels, David has served as assistant conductor of the Orchestre BruMe – Bruxelles Méditerranée, under the artistic direction of Hoviv Hayrabedian. He has also acted as assistant conductor to Jean-François Verdier in an academic context. In 2025, he was a semi-finalist in the 5th International Conducting Competition of the University of Almería. He made his official debut as a conductor in May 2026 with l'Orchestre Symphonique de l'ULB in the Concert de Printemps.
Throughout his academic career, he has attended masterclasses with Javier Castro, Nacho Rodríguez, Martin Schmidt, Anne Kohler, Mark Heron, Antony Hermus, Nicolas Krüger and Jean-Marc Burfin.
